We get nutrients from the food that we eat.

Types of Nutrients

Vitamins do a range of different things in the body but they are essential to stay healthy.

Minerals are needed for a variety of bodily functions such as building strong bones and teeth.

Fat, Fiber & Water

We need fat in our diet.  Fat is used for energy, helps our brain to work properly and is part of every cell in our body.

Fibre keeps our digestive system working properly and helps to remove waste from our bodies.  It is also good for the health of our heart and helps us to feel full.

Our bodies are about 60% water so it is important for our overall good health.  We lose water all the time in our sweat, urine and breath.

Carbohydrates & Protein

Carbohydrates give our body energy.  Wholegrain foods are the healthiest.

Protein helps our bodies grow and repair.  Meat and milk products provide the largest amount of protein but we can also get protein when we eat nuts, beans and soy products.
