Energy

Energy is the power that makes our body work.  Every cell of our body needs energy to function.  Scientists’ measure energy in tiny units called ‘joules’.  A joule is the amount of energy used to move an object one meter in one second.

Energy in food is measured in kilojoules. (One kilo joule equals a thousand joules.)

Energy Needs

People need different amounts of energy depending on their age, size and activity levels.

We need extra energy to grow, recover from serious illness, be very active and keep warm when it’s very cold.

Food

Food for Energy

We get energy from the food we eat.

Food is broken down in the digestive system and nutrients travel to where they are needed in the blood.  We get most of our energy from carbohydrates, protein and fat.

Balancing Act

If we are not using the food we eat for energy it gets stored in the body.

If we continue to eat more food than we use for energy, we get bigger.  It’s a balancing act.
